Building for Jodhpur's Climate

Why elevation materials, water storage, ventilation and waterproofing choices matter in a hot, dry city.

Jodhpur's climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with intense summer sun, cool winter nights and a short, sometimes heavy monsoon. Good homes here are designed around those facts rather than against them. Thick external walls, stone or textured cladding on sun-facing elevations, and deep window recesses all reduce heat gain; light exterior colours reflect it.

Cross-ventilation is the second priority. Rooms with openings on two sides, ventilators above windows, and a terrace or courtyard that allows warm air to escape keep interiors comfortable and reduce dependence on air conditioning. Where AC is planned, concealed copper piping installed during construction avoids ugly retrofits later.

Water needs planning in both directions. An underground tank with an overhead tank gives a reliable supply and pressure; rainwater harvesting captures the monsoon and recharges the ground; and proper site drainage prevents water pooling against foundations. Finally, use waterproof exterior paint and treat terraces and wet areas properly — the few heavy monsoon days each year are when most avoidable damage happens.
